All road safety professionals share a common goal of wanting to reduce trauma on roads. Throughout the transportation industry, efforts aimed at achieving this goal tend to be focused on enhanced crash analyses, improved countermeasure selection, refined risk reduction factors and the continual betterment of design standards. While each of these has merit, limited attention is given to improving the techniques that enhance the identification of actual locations where countermeasures have the best potential to reduce road trauma – despite this being the first and most critical aspect in developing effective road safety programs.

At Abley Transportation Consultants, our primary aim is to develop and deliver analytical tools to transportation authorities to improve their understanding of road safety risk across their network. We combine our expert knowledge of road safety with a range of geospatial and other analytical techniques to help achieve this aim.

Based on a philosophy of using data already held by transportation authorities and streamlining risk assessment methods, using only those factors that have the most influence on road safety risk, our tools have successfully been applied to state and local roads alike. The ‘whole of network’ insight to risk is being used as the evidence basis for justifying decision-making, supporting funding applications, and establishing road safety policies.

The work we do is aligned with the Safe System principles that accept:

  • People make mistakes
  • People are vulnerable
  • We need to share responsibility
  • We need to strengthen all parts of the system

We hope the risk assessment techniques, case studies and resources provided on this website are helpful for those involved in the development and delivery of road safety programmes and those searching for data-driven decision-making tools.
