Our team includes both road safety engineers and geospatial professionals which allows us to harness the power of geospatial techniques and apply them in a way which provides powerful, consistent and useful information for road safety practitioners.  The outputs of our work can be used for a range of applications, including:

Network Risk Assessments

Network Risk Assessments provide a basis for comparing risk across an entire road network. Our risk assessments across entire road networks provides the basis for informing sound, objective decision-making – improving the likelihood that interventions will be delivered in locations of highest risk.

Risk Assessment Tools

Albert Einstein said, “We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them” and so it is true of measuring risk.  We develop and apply risk assessment tools that are tailored for the issue they are describing – taking into account the critical factors that contribute to the risk.

Programme Prioritisation

The effectiveness of any road safety programme is limited by the potential reduction in deaths and serious injuries that are achievable.  We employ evidence based techniques to inform the composition of programmes by prioritising the highest risk locations and interventions that are most likely to deliver safety benefits.

Speed Management

Speed management is a fundamental pillar of the Safe System philosophy.  We are helping road controlling authorities to consider risk in a speed management context across their regions through the application of analytical network tools that provide objective measures of road safety risk.

Procedures and Guidelines

We are leading a paradigm shift in developing analytical procedures and guidelines that shift the focus away from targeting sites where the fatal or serious crashes have occurred in the past, to one that predicts where high severity crashes are most likely to occur in the future.

Crash Estimation

Understanding the potential effectiveness of different safety approaches and interventions is paramount to improved safety outcomes.  We correlate risk metric indicators against crash statistics to identify target levels of safety performance that vary as a function of the road type and speed environment.

Themed Analyses

Safety issues vary across road networks.  In urban areas, the key issues are at intersections and the safety of vulnerable road users. In rural areas, the key issues are on corridors with inconsistent design standards, such as high-risk curves.  Network-wide themed analyses are used to target the main safety issues in different settings, which further enhance the likelihood of improvements being delivered in locations where road trauma reductions are most achievable.

Commonality Identification

Engineering interventions are most effective when they address a common cause or trend in crashes.  We have developed analytical tools that identify crash factors (outcome and causal) that are overrepresented, thus allowing screening for potential crash reduction study locations to be identified more readily.

Enforcement Deployment

Safe Road Use is a fundamental pillar of the Safe System philosophy.  We help enforcement agencies plan the deployment of their resources to target specific behaviours based on objective risk analyses of crash, road infrastructure and infringement notice information.

Our team supports the wider transportation industry by providing cutting edge research into road safety matters with a specific focus on application.

Safe Routing

Routing choice is commonly governed by distance and time, and occasionally fuel economy, but what about safety?  We have developed a process that incorporates safety to routing algorithms allowing users to understand the relative safety of different route options, alongside distance and time.

Data Value Add

Road controlling authorities put great effort and expense into collecting large quantities of high-quality transport related data.  However, the true value of this data is often unrealised because of the narrow range of applications for which the data is used.  We have a great track record of adding value to the central and local government organisations by bringing together a variety of transport datasets and combining it with industry knowledge inside a geospatial environment to improve road safety.
